Jordan - final Middle East post
I wish I could've posted many more photos, but these are some of the best and perhaps most interesting. I have some detail photos that aren't so scenic, that I'll end up posting sometime soon, but they're not really part of the trip series.
Some of the buildings in Petra weathered better than others. It's hard to know however, how fantastic they looked to begin with.
Taken from inside one of the cliffside rooms. Not much inside.
Around noon, I climbed up a long long path that led up the cliffside, into a deep gully and then back up the other side to the 'high place of sacrifice'. It was a spot - nearly the highest around the city where blood sacrifices were made. As I neared the top, this little 8 year old girl offered to sell me some rocks and trinkets, but settled to be a short-term tour guide. Here she had just led me to the sacrifice stone and then she sat down and offered for me to sit next to her. The photo doesn't show it well, but she is literally sitting on the edge of the cliff. It's straight down below, several hundred feet to the bottom.
This was the view from about 1/3 of the way up the climb to the place of sacrifice, with Petra in the background.
I wouldn't be surprised to find myself in Israel again before too many years, but I'm pretty sure my trip to Jordan was a once-in-a-lifetime deal. Maybe next time to Egypt...
